Update from Johannesburg
Tuesday, August 31st, 2004 by Dave MarttunenThis comes to you from Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Little that we read in preparation for culture shock in books seemed to help us as we experienced it first hand. When we first arrived, those helping us to orientate to this city and country told us first hand experiences (and many second ones as well) of muggings, car-jackings, thefts and burglaries. Needless to say our hair was standing on end and Donna especially was deeply distressed. Now nearly three weeks later we see the value of their warnings, which were not intended to alarm us, but to make us constantly vigilant to the dangers in everyday life here.
The reason we have been slow to contact you is the difficulty we have had in securing internet access at reasonable cost.
We are posting this on our website to let you know that we are settling and see the Hand of God clearly guiding us as we make our way in our new life here.
Thank you for your prayers. Praise the Lord for:
- Our two bedroom flat (apartment) in a secure complex that has a brick wall with barbed wire on top, and a security guard 24/7.
- Cell phones for security and convenience as we travel around the city and country.
- Dr. Eric Robbins of the Baptist Union of South Africa’s (BUSA) Mission Department who has been our advocate in so many ways as we settle here.
- Angelo Scheepers, the General Secretary of the BUSA who has opened doors for us as we explore partnerships in South Africa
- Our introduction to Church planting and Evangelism in the BUSA when we attended a 4 day conference in East London. 100 Evangelists and Church planters attended. We drove the 9.5 hours on our own to get there, without mishap or problem!
- Our catching on to driving on the right hand side of the road.
Join us as we pray for:
- A second hand car that will serve our needs.
- Contacts with mission and church agencies as we work to develop partnerships in South Africa.
- Wisdom for which leads to pursue and in what order.
- Furnishings for our flat.
- Telephone installation that will help us with internet access and contact to Canada.
- Donna’s back (she has a herniated disc that has flared-up).
Thanks for partnering with us, we could not do this ministry without you!
Dave and Donna
